Get ready for a game-changer at Mill Park Lakes Recreation Reserve! 🌟
A Bright Future for South Morang's Sports Scene
The City of Whittlesea has kicked off an exciting project to revolutionize sports lighting at Mill Park Lakes, and it's a game-changer for the entire community.
Say Goodbye to Aging Lighting
The current metal halide system, a relic of the past, is being replaced with cutting-edge 100-lux LED lights. These modern fixtures not only meet the standards set by AFL Victoria and cricket authorities but also bring a host of benefits.
Benefits Galore
With an investment of $434,000, this upgrade promises enhanced visibility, increased field usage, reduced energy consumption, lower maintenance costs, and a greener environment with reduced carbon emissions. It's a win-win for everyone involved!
Sport Unites the Community
Sport is the heart and soul of Mill Park Lakes, with football and cricket seeing a surge in participation, especially among juniors and women. The new lighting system will empower local clubs to train more efficiently, host night fixtures, and organize preseason activities and community events with ease.
A Huge Boost for Local Clubs
Gary Kallinikos, chairman of the South Morang Football Netball Club, couldn't be more thrilled. With a rapidly expanding women's and junior program, the club has faced challenges in accommodating training and games on the main oval. But now, with the new lighting, they can look forward to more night-time training sessions and improved safety, as dark areas on the ground will be a thing of the past.
"This will allow us to play more of our home games here at home instead of away. We can finally host Friday night games!" Kallinikos exclaimed.
Fair Access for All
This project aligns perfectly with the Victorian Government's Fair Access Policy Roadmap and the City of Whittlesea's own Fair Access Policy, ensuring equal opportunities for everyone to participate in sports.
A Collaborative Effort
Funding for this ambitious project includes a generous $250,000 contribution from the Victorian Government's Local Sports Infrastructure Fund, along with a $10,000 contribution from the South Morang Football Netball Club. It's a testament to the power of collaboration between different levels of government and local communities.
A Bright Future Awaits
City of Whittlesea Mayor, Councillor Lawrie Cox, expressed his excitement: "This project will make the reserve safer and more accessible, encouraging participation, especially among women and girls. We're grateful to the state government for their support. When we work together, the community thrives.
I can't wait to see the benefits when the lights shine bright in 2026!"
