Massive Snowstorm Hits GTHA: School Closures and Exam Updates (2026)

A Blizzard of Disruption! The Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) is bracing for a colossal snowstorm, with forecasts predicting 60 or more centimeters of snow to blanket the region. This isn't just a dusting; it's a full-blown winter assault, forcing widespread school closures and transportation cancellations across multiple school boards.

But here's where it gets truly impactful for students and families: The sheer volume of expected snowfall has prompted school boards to shutter their doors, impacting everything from regular classes to crucial secondary school exams.

In Toronto, both the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) have announced that all schools, administrative buildings, and even childcare centers will be closed to students and most staff on Monday. For those facing secondary exams, fear not! These have been postponed and will be rescheduled for later in the week. The TCDSB has specifically noted that exams originally set for January 27th and 28th will proceed as planned, while Monday's exams will be moved to January 29th.

Across York Region, the York Catholic District School Board is following suit with a complete school closure. Secondary students with exams scheduled for Monday will see theirs moved to Thursday, with Tuesday and Wednesday's exams remaining on their original dates. The York Region District School Board has also confirmed closures for all its schools and board locations.

Durham Region is also in the thick of it. Both the Durham District School Board and the Durham Catholic District School Board have declared all school sites closed for Monday. Adding to the disruption, Durham Student Transportation Services has cancelled all bus services for the day.

The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board has shut down all its schools and facilities for students and staff due to the severe winter weather. Secondary exams scheduled for Monday will be moved to a designated Contingency Day. Similarly, the Peel District School Board is closing all schools and worksites, meaning childcare, night school, and permit activities are also on hold. Monday's exams are rescheduled for Wednesday, January 28th, at the same time, while Tuesday's exams will proceed as planned.

And in Halton, both the Halton District and Halton Catholic District School Boards (HCDSB) are closing schools and administrative centers. Transportation services are cancelled across Zones 1, 2, and 3. The HCDSB emphasized that this decision was made with the absolute priority of student, family, and staff safety given the significant snowfall and deteriorating road conditions.

And this is the part most people miss: While the closures are a clear indicator of the storm's severity, the impact on learning and student well-being extends far beyond a single day. The rescheduling of exams, the disruption to childcare, and the potential for extended school closures can create significant stress for families.

What do you think? Is it always the right call to close schools so broadly, or should there be more flexibility for essential exams? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
