The Rise of Lando Norris: Proving Himself Against the Best in F1
Lando Norris, the newly crowned Formula One world champion, shares his incredible journey and the mindset that led him to the pinnacle of motorsport. But here's where it gets controversial: his success isn't just about talent; it's about a unique, self-driven approach to proving himself.
Norris recalls the moment he signed his first contract with McLaren, a moment that left him beaming with joy for days. Seven years later, he's not just achieved his dream of becoming world champion; he's done it with a mindset that's as irrepressible as his grin.
Winning the championship after an intense season-long battle, which climaxed in a thrilling three-way fight in Abu Dhabi, was a defining moment for Norris. It was a turning point, not just in his career, but in his self-belief.
"I'm always in my head, thinking deeply about myself and my abilities. It's always been about proving it to myself. That inner drive has pushed me to be better. Last year's success has given me the confidence to know I can do it again, 100%", he says.
Norris has always been honest about his self-criticism and lack of self-confidence, which led to mental health struggles early in his F1 career. But even last year, he admitted he didn't see himself as good as his title rivals - veterans like Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, and contemporaries like Max Verstappen and George Russell.
And this is the part most people miss: by going toe-to-toe with these legends and coming out on top, Norris now enters the new season with the conviction that he can take on and beat the best. "I used to look up and wonder how I could ever compete with these guys. But I've worked on my belief in myself. I know I can be as good as Lewis, Max, or anyone else. I proved it to myself last year when I had the chance with a quick car."
Norris proved his point in a fierce contest against teammate Oscar Piastri, who led for most of the season, and a late charge from Verstappen in the Red Bull. It was a coming-of-age moment for Norris, who delivered when it mattered most, driving a championship-winning car from the start with McLaren.
At the end of the season, Norris was in tears, but also beaming with a smile that hasn't left him. The joy is evident in every pre-season event, and he admits to the surreal feeling of seeing the No. 1 on his car for the first time.
Norris sees his title win as a personal victory, the first Briton to do so since Hamilton in 2020. It's a win that's made him grow as a person and a driver.
"I'm never pleased until I know I've done it right. That's just me. I've learned to manage the negative impact of this approach. As long as I understand it and learn from it, I can improve. I don't let it bring me down or affect those around me negatively."
Last year, this approach was put to the test. Norris struggled against Piastri in the first half of the season, lacking front grip from the car, especially in qualifying. But how he dealt with these doubts and turned things around showed the determination of a champion and a maturity akin to drivers he admires, like Hamilton and Schumacher.
"It's a work in progress. I still get annoyed with myself, but I worked on it a lot last year. From two-thirds of the way through, there was a definite change in my mentality."
This was best seen at the Dutch Grand Prix in August, where his car failed with seven laps to go, leaving him alone in the dunes, cursing his luck. With Piastri winning, Norris was 34 points behind with nine races left. Most observers thought the title was out of reach.
"Dealing with that setback was a good learning point. I didn't let it affect the team or me. How we came back from that was the turning point for the rest of the season. I continued to improve, work with the team on the car, and get it into a better window for me. When all these little things came together, that's when I took the biggest step forward."
This year, with F1 embracing the most extensive regulation changes in its history, all teams start from scratch. The true pecking order for the opening round in Australia remains unclear, with McLaren in the mix but perhaps just behind Mercedes and Ferrari, who looked strongest in pre-season testing.
"It's like playing a bit defensively in football, trying to exploit the counterattack," says team principal Andrea Stella. "We'll aggressively develop the McLaren MCL40 during the season, as all teams learn about their new cars on the go."
With another tough fight ahead, is Norris as hungry now that he's achieved his dream?
"My motivation has always been to win championships and races. Every race, the target is to win. My motivation comes from the team and the people around me. That hasn't changed. So my drive to perform and do well remains the same. The bonus is winning, and the main goal is making my team happy, so nothing changes for now."
Norris even recalls fondly his first race suit, a gift from the parents of a fellow karter when he started the sport. "It was one of those moments when you get something as a kid and never want to let go. I slept in it, even though it was smelly and old. The boots were too big, but I'd wear it all day at home; it was awesome."
He still has that suit, a memento of his journey to the world championship, and with it, a real belief that there's more to come.
