Get ready for a unique gaming experience that will have you crafting, battling, and having a blast! Kiln: A Clay-tastic Adventure is here to revolutionize the multiplayer party brawler scene. But here's where it gets controversial... it's not just about fighting; it's about the art of pottery!
We had the pleasure of chatting with Derek Brand, the Project Lead at Double Fine, to uncover the secrets behind their latest masterpiece, Kiln. This game combines the ancient art of pottery with intense multiplayer battles, creating an experience like no other.
Imagine shaping your own warrior from clay, crafting every detail, and then stepping into the arena to shatter your opponents. Kiln offers a fresh take on team-based multiplayer, where your creativity and strategy are key.
The Art of Creation:
Kiln's unique twist is the pottery creation aspect. You literally handcraft your warrior, and your choices matter! Brand explains, "Making pots in real life is challenging, but we wanted to make it accessible and fun. With just a button and a control stick, you can create any shape you desire and feel like a master potter."
In our hands-on experience, the pottery creation was incredibly intuitive. From throwing clay to molding, it felt natural and satisfying. You can choose from small, medium, or large clay amounts, each offering different attributes and special moves. For instance, a little plate can have a trick shot, while a cup-shaped pot shoots out popcorn!
Battle Arenas and Beyond:
Once your pot is ready, it's time to enter the battle arenas. Kiln offers a variety of maps inspired by ancient mythology, each with its own obstacles and strategies. One of our favorites was Athena's map room, with its narrow passages and strategic sponges to create temporary walls.
The Wedge: A Social Hub:
After crafting your pot, head to The Wedge, a social hub and a slice of the goddess Celadon's domain. Here, you can train, practice, and customize your pot. Slip, Celadon's dog, runs the in-game store, offering unique stickers and trinkets to decorate your creation. You can even find other players' pots on display and claim them for battle.
Communication and Community:
Kiln encourages a more physical and interactive way of communication. You can express your admiration for a pot with a heart above your head, or dance to show your enthusiasm. Brand mentions, "We wanted to simplify interactions to basic emotions like 'I like that' or 'Let's hang out.'"
A World of Ancient Inspiration:
Brand reveals, "We wanted to lean on the element of ancient technology and art. The world of Celadon embodies creation and destruction, and each map is based on ancient Greek or Egyptian gods."
Launch and Beyond:
Kiln is set to launch in Spring 2026, and the team is committed to delivering an immersive experience with the Quench mode and lobby. Post-launch, they plan to engage with the community and adapt based on feedback.
A Unique and Engaging Experience:
Our time with Kiln was short but memorable. The ability to create your own battler, combined with a variety of attacks and strategic elements, makes for an incredibly fun and engaging experience.
So, are you ready to dive into the world of Kiln? Will you be a master potter or a fierce warrior? Let us know your thoughts in the comments! We'd love to hear your opinions on this innovative game.
