Hospitalization due to Hand Sanitiser Containing Methanol - What You Need to Know (2026)

Ingesting Hand Sanitizer Leads to Hospitalization and Recall

A concerning incident involving hand sanitizer has recently come to light, highlighting the potential dangers of ingesting such products. A person was hospitalized with acute methanol poisoning after consuming Dr. Schwartz Hand Sanitizer, which was supplied by Australia's largest privately owned hotel chain, the Paradise Resort on the Gold Coast.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) issued a recall on Wednesday, alerting the public to the presence of a high concentration of methanol in the hand sanitizer. Methanol, a toxic substance, is not permitted in alcohol-based hand sanitizers or any public-use products. The regulator confirmed that 60ml bottles of the product were provided to guests for free between August 31, 2020, and January 6, 2021, while 200ml bottles, which were not complimentary, were also affected.

New South Wales Health authorities issued a public warning on Thursday, emphasizing the serious risks associated with methanol ingestion. Despite the likelihood of significant toxicity from skin exposure being low, ingesting methanol can lead to severe and irreversible injuries or even death. The health department spokesperson confirmed that the contamination was identified due to a case of acute methanol poisoning in Queensland.

The hotel's general manager, David Brook, attributed the recall to a guest's inappropriate consumption of two bottles of the sanitiser, causing a medical reaction. Schwartz Family Co, the hotel's owner, is overseeing the recall, which was initiated after the incident. Schwartz Family Co imported the hand sanitizer from India and supplied it to the Paradise Resort, which is part of Australia's largest privately owned hotel group.

Health authorities urge individuals with the recalled hand sanitizer to discontinue its use and dispose of it immediately. New South Wales residents can dispose of it in general waste, while those in other states and territories should consult their local authorities for proper disposal methods. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of using hand sanitizers as intended and following product instructions to ensure personal safety.
