A Brisbane cake swap event is under scrutiny due to potential food safety and hygiene issues. The event, which attracted over 1,000 attendees, raised concerns among food safety experts and authorities alike. One attendee, Kayla Nemaia, reported long lines and exposed cakes in the heat, leading to melted icing and potential contamination. Her sister, also in attendance, noted the lack of air conditioning and the two-hour wait between cake sampling, raising further health concerns. Samruddhi Phadke, another participant, expressed worries about allergies and dietary requirements, citing the lack of ingredient lists and inadequate knife availability. The event organizers, Doughy Events, had issued a waiver, but the Brisbane City Council, responsible for regulating food businesses, has launched an investigation. The council received eight complaints from Queensland Health, focusing on compliance with food licensing regulations. Food Safety Information Council CEO, Lydia Buchtmann, described cake swaps as a 'recipe for disaster', emphasizing the risk of illness due to unknown kitchen hygiene practices. Buchtmann warned that food poisoning can be severe and life-threatening for vulnerable groups. Despite the concerns, Doughy Events plans to host more cake swaps in Sydney and Canberra, prompting discussions on the risks and responsibilities of such events.
