Blizzard's StarCraft Universe Might Be Getting a New Shooter, But History Suggests Caution!
It appears Blizzard Entertainment is once again exploring the idea of bringing the beloved StarCraft universe into the realm of first-person shooters. Rumors are circulating that they've teamed up with the South Korean gaming powerhouse, Nexon, for what could be their latest attempt at this ambitious crossover. While Blizzard hasn't officially confirmed anything, this exciting possibility has surfaced thanks to a report from The Korea Economic Daily, a prominent business newspaper in South Korea.
The report suggests that Nexon has already assembled a dedicated development team within its shooter division for this project. Adding an interesting twist, it's been mentioned that a seasoned StarCraft modder is at the helm, potentially bringing a deep understanding of the game's core mechanics and lore to the new venture.
Blizzard has, for a long time, harbored ambitions to branch out its critically acclaimed real-time strategy series into a shooter format. Meanwhile, Nexon has been making significant strides in the Western shooter market, notably through its ownership of Embark Studio, the creative minds behind popular titles like The Finals and Arc Raiders. This partnership could leverage Nexon's recent successes and Blizzard's iconic IP.
But here's where it gets controversial... Despite the potential, the report itself expresses a degree of caution. It points to a past collaboration between Nexon and Square Enix for a Final Fantasy spin-off that unfortunately never made it past the initial planning stages. This note of caution is certainly warranted, especially when we consider Blizzard's own history with StarCraft spin-off projects that never saw the light of day.
Remember StarCraft Ghost? Announced way back in 2002, this was Blizzard's initial foray into expanding StarCraft beyond its RTS roots. It was envisioned as a tactical-action console game where players would step into the boots of a formidable Ghost operative working for the Dominion. However, after numerous delays, it was ultimately canceled in 2006.
Then came a second attempt, codenamed Ares, which was reportedly a shooter that felt akin to playing 'Battlefield in the StarCraft universe'. Sadly, this project was also shelved in 2019 to allow Blizzard to redirect its focus towards major titles like Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2. Like Ghost, Ares too fell by the wayside.
More recently, in 2024, renowned reporter Jason Schreier shared insights about a third StarCraft shooter project reportedly in development at Blizzard, with Dan Hay, a former executive producer on Far Cry, leading the charge. He joined Blizzard in 2022.
And this is the part most people miss... The crucial question now is: could Nexon's reported project be the same one Dan Hay has been spearheading, or is it an entirely new iteration? The timeline is a bit fuzzy. Hay's project was apparently in development two years ago, while the Nexon game sounds more recent and is being developed on a different continent. This leaves us with a fascinating puzzle! IGN has reached out to Blizzard for more details, and we're all waiting with bated breath.
What are your thoughts on this potential StarCraft shooter? Do you believe Blizzard can finally break the shooter curse with this franchise, or are the past cancellations a sign of things to come?
